Do you like being touched in yoga?
Adjustments are one of my favorite things about teaching.
Adjustments help us realize where we can’t see or perceive ourselves and our own bodies.
Adjustments allow us to share touch.
Adjustments literally remind us that we can (almost always) change our habitual patterns.
Re-wire our muscle memory. Re-wire our lovely little brains.
Confession: I used to feel really uncomfortable when I got adjusted in yoga classes.
I felt self conscious. Was I doing it *that* wrong? (Probably)
I felt a little exposed.
I wasn’t comfortable adjusting.
This was one of the most gorgeous things about working with @zunayoga in November on a 200-hr yoga teacher training. I had the privilege of seeing new beautiful teachers going through their own process in the process. They were all adjusting.
We are constantly adjusting and re-adjusting, to the world around us, to each other.
Adjustments are a reminder that we can change our little habitual patterns. And when they come in the form of gentle sweet touch?
Well then it’s also a reminder that we adjust and adapt better with a little bit of tlc from others.
I’m not a “there’s one day in the year left” kind of person. But I am someone who likes to reflect and I must say:
2022. You’ve been expansive (my word was ‘expansion’) and you’ve been wild and you’ve been unexpected and you’ve been beautiful. You’ve forced me to adjust again and again. You’ve thrown a lot of curve balls. You’ve showered me with magic and travel and friends and enveloped me in lotsa love. You are the year I got my Italian citizenship. You’re also the year I became a somatic coach.
And there’s my teeny tiny reflection and here’s me adjusting, captured by the oh-so-brilliant @adamgavin on a balmy day in Bali last month ✨
