Reality vs. Instagram and why we post what we post and also on authenticity and also look at me! I’m in Tuscany and it’s stunning ✨
Anyway. A mostly unstructured list of thoughts on #authenticity:
-Instagram is a fully curated shop window that we each choose to use in different ways. There’s like- some reason we all share what we share, right?
-Last year whenever I wrote or posted something that I perceived as ‘vulnerable’ I’d have this critical voice, a filter of sorts, whispering in my ear that I shouldn’t share that thing cause this person might read it and interpret it wrong. This year (and hopefully forever more) I’m trying to let that shit go.
-My instinct was to post the second picture first. Y’know, the one where I’m coy and not looking at the camera and fixing my hair just so? Yeah, that’s the kinda content I’m trying to feature on IG.
-But I am, as Livia has affectionately been saying all week, quite the ham. And the first picture is clearly not fully posed and honestly shows who I am better anyway (whatever that means?) and it’s a good picture and a fun picture and I can do whatever I want on here. Right? Right!
-I think my ultimate point is about...authenticity? Yes. Authenticity. And recognizing that even when we’re authentic on social media platforms there is STILL a filter. In fact, even when we’re authentic in real life there is still a filter.
And we’re always changing and we’re always growing and evolving and adapting to the infinite circumstances that life presents to us. This particular circumstance is pretty great though. And that concludes a mild musing on authenticity versus posing. Or as we like to say these days: Instagram vs. Reality
